배영환(b.1969)은 소모되고 버려진 일상의 사물들을 수집하고 조합하여 현대인의 희노애락과 삶의 애환을 풀어낸다. 특히 작가가 1990년대 후반부터 진행해온 <유행가> 연작은 1980-90년대에 유행하던 가요의 가사를 알약, 깨진 술병조각 등과 같은 남루한 재료들로 적어 내려가며 한국사회의 시대상과 감수성을 표현한 대표작이다. 홍익대학교에서 동양화를 전공한 작가는 조각, 설치, 회화, 사진, 미디어 등 다양한 매체에의 접근을 시도해왔으며, 그 외에도 <노숙자수첩>, <갓길 프로젝트>, <도서관프로젝트> 등 사회적 약자와 소수자들을 대상으로 한 공공미술 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 그는 Asian Art Museum(San Francisco), Minsheng Art Museum(Shanghai), Mori Museum, 플라토, 아뜰리에 에르메스 등 전세계의 대표적인 미술기관에서 전시를 개최하였으며, 광주비엔날레 특별상, 오늘의 젊은작가상, 대한민국 공공디자인대상 우수사례 부문 최우수상을 수상하였다. 그의 작품은 Mori Museum, 국립현대미술관, 플라토 등에 소장되어 있다.
