쿠바 출신의 호르헤 파르도(b.1963)는 색채와 빛의 요소를 디자인과 건축의 영역에 불어넣고 램프, 타일, 식탁, 의자 등 아름다움과 실용성을 동시에 갖춘 유기적 형태의 오브제들을 제시하며 삶과 미술 간 소통을 가능하게 하는 총체예술 작업을 선보여왔다. 그는 미술의 역할에 관해 끊임없이 질문하며 상업적인 재료와 도구, 기술들을 순수미술의 영역에 적극 끌어들이고, 회화, 조각, 가구, 건축, 인테리어 등 예술의 제 분야가 교차하는 작업을 제시한다. 파르도의 작품은 뉴욕 현대 미술관, 시카고 아트 인스티튜트, 파리 퐁피두센터, 아일랜드 현대 미술관, 뒤셀도르프 K21 등 전 세계 굴지의 미술관에서 전시되었다. 작가는 로스앤젤레스 현대 미술관의 조각 설치 프로젝트, 디아 아트 파운데이션의 북샵 프로젝트, 독일 뮌스터 조각 프로젝트 등 대규모 설치 프로젝트에 관여했다. 현재 로스엔젤레스에서 거주 및 활동 중이다.
Jorge Pardo(b.1963), born in Cuba, incorporates elements of color and light to the area of design and architecture and creates beautiful and practical objects of organic forms such as lamp, tile, dining table, and chair. Pardo’s ‘gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art)’ enables communication between art and our everyday life. He continuously questions the role of art and actively incorporates industrial materials, tools, and techniques to the area of fine art. Through his art, Pardo blurs the boundaries between painting, sculpture, furniture, architecture, and interior design. Pardo’s artworks have been displayed at the Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA), Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, USA), Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin, Ireland), and K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (Düsseldorf, Germany). The artist participated in large-scale installation projects including that of Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (Los Angeles, USA), the Bookshop project at Dia Art Foundation (New York, USA), and Skulptur-Projekte Munster in Germany. Pardo currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
