전광영(b.1944)은 한지와 전통공예, 천연 염색을 접목한 독창적 작업 세계로 국제 무대에서 명성을 다져온 한국의 대표적인 작가다. 그는 고서(古書)의 낱장으로 섬세하게 싸고 묶은 작은 조각들을 천연 염색한 후, 이를 촘촘하게 펼쳐 구현한 연작 <집합(Aggregation)>을 통하여 무수한 시공간 속에 해체된 개인과 집단의 이야기들을 동양 특유의 '포용'적 사고로 다시 '결집'시켰다. 나아가 그 총체적 아름다움으로 한국의 정체성을 세계 미술계가 공감하는 보편적 미학의 언어로 풀어내는 데 성공하였다. 전광영은 뉴욕 브루클린미술관, 브뤼셀 보고시앙 재단, 도쿄 모리 아트센터, 과천 국립현대미술관 등 국내외 유명 미술 기관에서 개인전을 가진 바 있다. 2009년에는 한국 현대 미술의 독창성을 널리 알린 공로를 인정받아 '대한민국문화예술상' 미술 부문 대통령상을 수상했다. 그의 작품은 록펠러 재단, 빅토리아 앨버트 박물관, 예일대학교 미술관, 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관 등에 소장되어 있다.
Kwang Young Chun(b.1944) is an Korean artist acclaimed worldwide for his distinctive artworks that combine hanji, traditional crafts, and natural dyes. For his Aggregation series, Chun wraps parcels with old book pages and dyes them with natural colors. Through the densely clustered parcels, Chun ‘aggregates’ personal and collective stories that are dispersed across time and space with the distinctive Asian notion of ‘embracement.’ Furthermore, he presents a Korean identity via a universal aesthetic language that resonates with the entire world. Chun has held numerous solo exhibitions at many world-renowned institutions including Brooklyn Museum (New York, USA), Boghossian Foundation (Brussels, Belgium), Mori Arts Center Gallery (Tokyo, Japan), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Gwacheon, Korea). In 2009, Chun was awarded the prestigious Presidential Prize at the 41st Korean Culture and Art Prize in recognition of promoting distinctive qualities of Korean contemporary art. His works are included in the public collections of the Rockefeller Foundation (New York, USA), Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK), Yale University Art Gallery (Connecticut, USA), Nation Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea).
