신민주(b.1969)는 '붓질'이라는 근원적 예술 행위를 기반으로 회화의 본질에 관해 오랫동안 탐구해왔다. 작가가 삶 속에서 겪은 다양한 심리적 경험들은 이미지화하여 그 자신의 내면에 끊임없이 축적되고, 이렇게 축적된 상(像)들은 강렬한 붓질과 스퀴지로 안료를 밀어내는 기법으로 캔버스 화면 위에 충만히 발현된다. 그는 유채(有彩) 계열의 단색 바탕과 세찬 붓질의 대비를 통하여 모순되지만 혼재하는 감정들, 세상사의 빛과 그림자 등 상반된 조건들의 공존에 대한 자각을 온몸의 에너지로 표출해냈다. 신민주 작가는 홍익대학교 회화과에서 학사 및 석사과정을 마쳤으며, 일민미술관, 금호미술관, 한원미술관, 관훈갤러리 등 국내 유수 미술관과 갤러리에서 다수의 개인전 및 단체전을 개최하였다.
Shin Min Joo has consistently been exploring the essence of paintings based on ‘brushwork,’ which is a basic and essential practice in Art. Shin imprints different psychological experiences as images within her mind, then realizes them on canvases through powerful brushstrokes and her technique of pushing paint with a squeegee. The contrast between chromatic colors of the background and powerful brushstrokes expresses Shin’s understanding of the prevalent yet contradictory feelings, and contrasting yet co-existing conditions such as light and shadow. Shin earned a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in painting at Hongik University and has held numerous solo and group exhibitions at renowned Korean museums and galleries such as Ilmin Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Kumho of Art (Seoul, Korea), Hanwon Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Kwanhoon Gallery (Seoul, Korea).
