PKM 트리니티 갤러리는 2012년 11월 15일부터 2013년 1월 31일까지 팝아트의 살아있는 마지막 거장 클래스 올덴버그(Claes Oldenburg, 1929-) & 코셰 반 브루겐(Coosje van Bruggen, 1942-2009)의 작품전을 개최한다. 본 전시는 국내 최초로 클래스 올덴버그와 그의 동반자였던 코셰 반 브루겐의 협업 작품들을 대거 공개하는 자리로, 1970년대 초반부터 최근까지 올덴버그 고유의 시그니처 이미지로 자리 잡은 주요 환경 조각들의 마케트, 소품 조각 및 대형 실내 조각과 희귀 드로잉 등 43점, 그리고 그의 다큐멘터리 작업 자료를 함께 전시하는 회고전 규모의 작품전이다. 이번 전시를 위하여 PKM 트리니티 갤러리는 국내 최대의 멀티 문화공간인 타임스퀘어와 연계하여 높이 3미터가 각각 넘는 <French Horns, Unwound and Entwined>(2005), <Leaning Clarinet>(2006) 등 대형 실내조각 2점을 타임스퀘어의 아트리움에 설치한다. 음악, 영화, 공연, 미술을 비롯한 풍부한 문화 콘텐츠를 대중들에게 꾸준히 제공해 온 타임스퀘어는 올덴버그와 반 브루겐의 대형 조각 2점을 메인 공간에 소개함으로써 오랜 기간 동안 공공조각 프로젝트에 천착해 온 작가의 작품을 보다 많은 대중이 접할 수 있는 뜻깊은 기회를 제공할 예정이다. 음악, 영화, 공연, 미술을 비롯한 풍부한 문화 콘텐츠를 대중들에게 꾸준히 제공해 온 타임스퀘어는 올덴버그와 반 브루겐의 대형 조각 2점을 메인 공간에 소개함으로써 오랜 기간 동안 공공조각 프로젝트에 천착해 온 작가의 작품을 보다 많은 대중이 접할 수 있는 뜻깊은 기회를 제공할 예정이다.
스웨덴 스톡홀롬 출신의 올덴버그는 1950년대 후반부터 뉴욕에서 꾸준히 활동해 오면서 일상의 사물 이미지에 재료와 크기의 변형을 가하는 특유의 유머러스하고도 초현실적인 조형 작업으로 주목받아 왔다. 이미 익숙해진 주변 환경 속에 아이러니의 미학과 새로운 시정을 환기시키는 그의 작업은 초창기부터 화단의 폭발적인 반응을 이끌어냈고, 이로써 올덴버그는 이미 1970년대 후반 가장 영향력 있는 현대 미술가 중 한 사람으로 자리매김하였다. 1971년부터 네덜란드의 크롤러뮐러미술관 정원에 설치한 <트로월 Ⅰ(1971-76)>은 올덴버그와 반 브루겐의 협업이 시작된 계기이며, 이후 반 브루겐은 올덴버그의 예술적 조력자이자 인생의 동반자로 2009년 생의 마지막 순간까지 그와 함께했다. 미네아폴리스 조각공원의 <스푼브리지와 체리>(1988), 도쿄 국제전시센터의 <톱, 톱질>(1996), 샌프란시스코 린컨공원의 <큐피드의 화살>(2002) 등 전세계 곳곳에서 접할 수 있는 이들의 기념비적인 공공조각이 각 도시의 랜드마크로서 유명하며, 2006년 청계천 입구에 설치되어 뜨거운 화제를 불러일으킨 공공 조형물 스프링 또한 이들 부부의 작품이다. 이외에도 시카고 현대 미술관 순회전(1977), 뉴욕 구겐하임미술관 개인전(1986) 등 왕성한 활동에 이어 1995년에는 구겐하임미술관에서 개최된 대규모 회고전이 독일과 영국을 순회하였다. 최근 작가의 활동으로는 2012년 2월부터 오스트리아 현대 미술관에서 기획한 개인전 《The Sixties》이 쾰른의 루드비히미술관(6.22-9.30), 빌바오 구겐하임미술관(10.30-2013.2.17), 뉴욕의 현대 미술관(2013.4.14-8.5)을 거쳐 2014년까지 미네아폴리스의 워커아트센터(2013.9.14-2014.1.12)를 순회할 예정이다.
2012년 11월 PKM 트리니티 갤러리에서 개최되는 클래스 올덴버그 & 코셰 반 브루겐 전시에는 악기, 음식, 일상 소품 등을 주제로 한 대형 실내 조각과 희귀 드로잉, 프린트들이 대거 공개된다. 이중 PKM 트리니티 갤러리 및 타임스퀘어에서 선보이는 프렌치 호른, 클라리넷, 색소폰, 하프, 메트로놈 등 악기 관련 조각들은 1992년도에 이들 부부가 프랑스 루아르 지역의 고성을 구입한 뒤 손수 단장한 ‘Music Room’에서 파생된 창작물들을 모태로 하고 있다. 이외에도 2005년에 제작된 10여 점의 드로잉은 이듬해 청계천의 스프링 프로젝트 실현에 핵심적인 역할을 한 밑그림들이며 <Golf/Typhoon>, <Monument to the Last Horse>, <Knife Ship 1:12> 등은 주요 공공조각 프로젝트의 마케트들로, 관람객들로 하여금 전 세계 각 도시에서 접할 수 있는 올덴버그와 반 브루겐의 예술 세계를 한 곳에서 접할 수 있는 매력적인 경험을 제공할 것이다.
PKM Trinity Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works by the last living legend of Pop Art, Claes Oldenburg (1929- ) and Coosje van Bruggen (1942-2009) from November 15th, 2012 through January 31st, 2013. As the first major exhibition in Korea to present the comprehensive body of works by Claes Oldenburg and his collaborator and wife Coosje van Bruggen, this retrospective-scale exhibition includes the maquettes, indoor sculptures of various sizes, rare drawings, and documentary materials of their signature environment works dating from 1970s to the present. PKM Trinity Gallery presents 2 indoor scuptures that measure over 3 meters in height, 'French Horns, Unwound and Entwined' (2005) and 'Leaning Clarinet' (2006), in Times Square, which is the largest multicultural complex in Korea in order to offer the opportunity for a wider public audience to view the work in a public setting.
Born in Stockholm, Sweden, and working in New York since the late 1950s, Claes Oldenburg is internationally celebrated for his uniquely humorous and surrealistic sculptural works that portray everyday objects in various sizes and materials. Suggesting the beauty of irony and encouraging a new way of looking at the familiar everyday surroundings, Oldenburg’s work has received remarkable responses from the art world from the beginning of his career, establishing him as one of the most influential contemporary artists by the late 1970s. Oldenburg and van Bruggen started their collaborative works in 1971 with 'Trowel I' (1971-76), installed in the sculpture garden of Kröller-Müller Museum in Netherlands. Since then, van Bruggen spent the rest of her life as Oldenburg’s artistic collaborator and companion until her death in 2009. Their large scale projects around the world — such as 'Spoonbridge and Cherry' (1988) in Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, 'Saw, Sawing' (1996) in Tokyo International Exhibition Center, 'Cupid’s Span' (2002) in Rincon Park in San Francisco, and the much sensational and controversial work 'Spring' (2006) in Cheonggyecheon, Seoul — have become famous landmarks in numerous cities. Other than realizing such grand scale works in various sites, Oldenburg and van Bruggen held touring exhibitions with Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (1977-80), a solo exhibition at Guggenheim, New York (1986), and a large-scale retrospective exhibition at Guggenheim (1995) which toured throughout Germany and England. As recent exhibitions, the solo exhibition The Sixties, curated and exhibited by Museum of Modern Art in Austria in February 2012 will travel to Museum Ludwig in Cologne (June 22nd - Sept. 30th, 2012), Bilbao Guggenheim Museum (Oct. 30th, 2012 - Feb. 17th, 2013), Museum of Modern Art in New York (April 14th - Aug. 3rd, 2013), and Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (Sept. 14th, 2013 - Jan. 12th, 2014).
This comprehensive exhibition of Oldenburg and van Bruggen’s oeuvre at PKM Trinity Gallery in November 2012 presents large-scale indoor sculptures of instruments, food and everyday objects, as well as rare drawings and prints. In particular, the instrument-sculptures of horn, clarinet, saxophone, harp and metronome are from the ‘Music Room’ of the old castle in the French Loire Valley which the couple purchased in 1992. Of the rare drawings, about 10 of them from the exhibition were the fundamental sketches for 'Spring' in Cheonggyecheon, Korea. Presenting maquettes of the two artists’ major public sculptures such as 'Golf Typhoon', 'Monument to the Last Horse', and 'Knife Ship 1:12', this sensational exhibition invites the audience to the wonderful art world of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.
