«윤형근을 다시 상상하다»

PKM 갤러리는 오는 8월 26일부터 10월 3일까지 한국 단색화의 거목 故 윤형근 화백(1928–2007)의 개인전 «윤형근을 다시 상상하다(reimagine Yun Hyong-keun)»를 갤러리 전관에서 개최한다. 이번 전시는 «윤형근의 집(Yun Hyong-keun House)» 개관과 함께 이를 기념하는 의미에서 기획된 전시로, 1970년대부터 2000년대까지 각 시기를 대표하는 대형 회화와 한지 작업 등 30여 점을 폭 넓게 선보인다. 시간이 지나도 생생하게 살아있는 작품의 감동과 힘을 다시 마주하고, 윤형근이라는 작가와 그의 예술을 다시 새롭게 생각해 보는 자리다.
윤형근은 1970년대 다색(Umber)과 청색(Blue)을 사용한 ‘천지문(天地門)’ 회화를 선보이며 한국 단색화의 흐름을 이끌었다. 이번 전시는 윤형근의 천지문 회화가 자리 잡은 1970년대의 대표작에서 시작하여, 천지문 회화의 근원이자 서정적인 색감이 담긴 초기 작업, 나아가 보다 절제된 형식으로 변화된 후기 작업에 이르는 주요 작품을 살피며 시기별 작업에서 나타나는 변화와 지속에 주목한다. 아울러 그의 삶과 작업의 터전이었던 공간, 즉 집과 작업실을 중심으로 한 아카이브 자료를 함께 선보인다. 이를 통해 일상과 작업을 긴밀하게 이어갔던 윤형근의 태도와 그가 평생에 걸쳐 견지한 ‘삶이 곧 예술이고 예술이 곧 삶’이라는 신념을 조명한다.
윤형근은 1969년과 1975년 상파울루 비엔날레, 1995년 베니스 비엔날레, 2000년 광주 비엔날레 등 주요 국제전에 참여했다. 2018년에는 단색화 작가로서는 처음으로 국립현대미술관 서울관에서 대규모 회고전을 개최했으며, 해당 전시는 이후 베니스 팔라초 포르투니로 순회하며 국제적 주목을 받았다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 리움 미술관, 런던 테이트 모던, 마파 치나티 파운데이션, 시카고 아트 인스티튜트, 도쿄도 현대미술관 등에 영구 소장되어 있으며, 타계한 지 약 20년이 지난 오늘날에도 세계 주요 미술관과 컬렉션에서 꾸준히 조명되며 국제적인 명성을 이어가고 있다.
PKM Gallery will present reimagine Yun Hyong-keun, a solo exhibition of Yun Hyong-keun (1928–2007), a leading figure in Korean Dansaekhwa, from August 26 to October 3, 2026, across the entire gallery. Held in conjunction with the opening of Yun Hyong-keun House, the exhibition will present more than 30 works, including large-scale paintings and works on hanji spanning the 1970s through the 2000s. The exhibition invites viewers to encounter once again the enduring power of Yun’s work and to reconsider the artist and his practice from a fresh perspective.
Yun Hyong-keun produced a series of paintings in Umber and Blue from the 1970s onward and played a leading role in the Dansaekhwa movement. Beginning with signature works from the 1970s, when his Cheonjimun (Gate of Heaven and Earth) paintings took shape, the exhibition traces key works from his early period marked by lyrical hues through his later works, which evolved toward increasingly restrained forms. By bringing these works together, the exhibition considers both the changes and continuities that shaped Yun’s practice over the decades. The exhibition also presents archival materials centered on the spaces where Yun lived and worked, including his home and studio. Together, these works and archival materials offer a closer look at the connection between Yun’s everyday life and artistic practice, as well as his lifelong belief that “life is art and art is life.”
Yun Hyong-keun participated in major international exhibitions, including the São Paulo Biennale in 1969 and 1975, the Venice Biennale in 1995, and the Gwangju Biennale in 2000. In 2018, he became the first Dansaekhwa artist to have a major retrospective at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Seoul. The exhibition subsequently traveled to Palazzo Fortuny in Venice and received international attention. His works are held in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, Leeum Museum of Art, Tate Modern in London, the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, among others. Nearly two decades after his passing, his work continues to receive international recognition from leading museums and collections around the world.
