Cho Duck Hyun’s solo exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺: 𝘔𝘕𝘌𝘔𝘖𝘚𝘠𝘕𝘌 is on view at koo house museum. Beginning with a photo album left by Jin Ho-seop, an antique collector, the exhibition explores a family’s private memories and the traces of an era preserved within them. The artist reconstructs figures and everyday scenes from the photographs through painting and installation, bringing memories of the past into the present. Through these works, the exhibition reflects on the meaning of memory and how it takes shape anew.
Cho Duck Hyun (b. 1957) has developed a body of work based on “Photo-Drawing,” in which he renders old black-and-white photographs on canvas using pencil and Conté crayon. His practice explores the lives of anonymous individuals often obscured by grand historical narratives. The exhibition presents 11 works, including the 𝘔𝘕𝘌𝘔𝘖𝘚𝘠𝘕𝘌 series, which translates these figures and scenes into paintings, alongside other paintings and installations. A highlight is the large-scale new work 𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘴𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘴, created especially for the exhibition, which reveals through the material layers of painting how new time accumulates over erased traces. The exhibition is on view through November 29.
