국립현대미술관 서울관에서 열리고 있는 상설전 《한국현대미술 하이라이트》는 한국 현대미술사의 주요 흐름을 이끌어온 권진규, 서승원, 유영국, 윤형근, 정창섭의 대표작들을 통해 그 미학적 깊이와 시대적 울림을 조망합니다.
권진규의 1966년 작품은 새와 꽃을 모티프로 한 테라코타 부조 연작으로 자연을 대상으로 하되, 구조적으로 단순화한 것이 특징입니다. 유영국의 1965년 작품은 짙은 파랑과 강렬한 노랑, 그 사이로 스며드는 초록이 조화롭게 어우러지며, 색 자체가 풍경이자 감정이 되는 회화적 순간을 포착합니다. 윤형근의 1989년 대형 캔버스는 반복되는 붓질을 통해 수행적 정신과 존재론적 사유를 구현하며, 그 흔적은 작가의 내면과 역사적 고통의 중첩을 드러냅니다. 정창섭은 한국 고유의 물질인 한지를 바탕으로, 먹의 스밈과 종이의 결을 통해 여백의 미를 새로운 조형 언어로 확장합니다.
서승원의 회화는 기하학적 추상과 색면 회화의 경계에서 한국적 조형성을 탐색해온 1970–80년대의 주요 작업을 보여줍니다. 구조와 직관, 전통성과 현대성이 교차하는 지점에서 형성된 그의 조형 세계는 한국 모더니즘 회화의 독자적 지평을 제시합니다. 특히 현재 PKM 갤러리에서 진행 중인 개인전 《The Interplay》에서는 수십 년간 천착해온 ‘동시성’ 개념이 현재적 조형 언어로 구현되며, 과거의 전위적 실천이 오늘날의 시공간에서 재해석되는 과정을 드러냅니다.
The exhibition MMCA Collection: Korean Contemporary Art II – Highlights at MMCA Seoul offers a focused survey of Korean modern and contemporary art through pivotal works by Kwon Jin Kyu, Suh Seung-Won, Yoo Youngkuk, Yun Hyong-keun, and Chung Chang-Sup.
Kwon Jin Kyu’s 1966 terracotta reliefs, inspired by birds and flowers, abstract natural forms into simplified structures. Yoo Youngkuk’s 1965 canvas blends bold blue, yellow, and green, transforming color into landscape and emotion. Yun Hyong-keun’s large-scale 1989 painting conveys spiritual and historical depth through meditative, repetitive brushstrokes. Chung Chang-Sup expands the visual language of hanji, emphasizing the absorption of ink and the tactile quality of paper.
Suh Seung-Won’s works from the 1970s and 1980s explore a uniquely Korean visual syntax at the intersection of geometric abstraction and color field painting. His solo exhibition The Interplay at PKM Gallery further reinterprets his long-standing notion of “simultaneity” through a contemporary lens, bridging his avant-garde origins with the present.
