Olafur Eliasson (b. 1967)’s newly commissioned work 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘵 (2026) is now on view in the lobby of MMCA Seoul. Eliasson describes the work as an experience created collectively through light, movement, and people. Suspended from the ceiling of the museum lobby, where natural light enters, a luminous compound polyhedron and a fan are balanced at opposite ends of a long bar. As the fan operates irregularly, the entire structure moves along an unpredictable trajectory. Light within the glass polyhedron projects colorful polygons and subtle shadows onto the surrounding space. The work takes on different appearances as time and light change, with visitors who observe it becoming part of the work themselves.
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘵 (2026) is the first project commissioned under the “Contemporary Artist’s Commission on Tour” project, part of MMCA’s 2026 “MMCA Together” programme. Following its presentation at MMCA Seoul, the work is scheduled to be installed at Jeonbuk Museum of Art from November 2026 and at Gangneung Art Museum Sorol from February 2027.
