2025 청주공예비엔날레 특별전 《현대 트랜스로컬 시리즈: 엮음과 짜임》은 청주공예비엔날레와 영국 맨체스터 휘트워스 미술관이 공동으로 기획하고, 인도 국립공예박물관 & 하스트칼라 아카데미와 협력하여 선보이는 국제 순회전입니다.
홍영인은 이번 전시에서 인도 구자라트 쿠치 지역의 여성 장인 공동체 ‘칼라 락샤(Kala Raksha)’와 협업해 제작한 신작 〈신성한 제국〉(2025)을 선보입니다. 이들이 전통적으로 계승해 온 미러워크, 아플리케와 같은 기법은 각 여성들의 고유한 문화유산이자 경제적 자립의 수단이었습니다. 홍영인은 그들이 전통을 바탕으로 창작을 할 수 있도록 디자인과 협업 방식을 설계하여 작품으로 탄생시켰습니다.
〈디와 아냔〉(2021)은 영국 체스터 동물원에서 함께 살아가던 코끼리 가족의 이야기를 담았습니다. 세상을 떠난 할머니 코끼리 ‘Thi’와 손주 ‘Anjan’을 위해 제작된 짚신이 전시장에 놓입니다. 짚풀 공예 명인 이충경, 박연화와 협업으로 제작된 이 작업은 인간의 기억과 애도가 비인간 존재에게 투영되는 순간을 보여줍니다. 전시는 11월 2일까지.
𝘏𝘺𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘪 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴: 𝘌𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘞𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘯 is co-organized by Cheongju Craft Biennale 2025 and the Whitworth, the University of Manchester, in collaboration with the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy, and in partnership with Hyundai Motor. This co-curated exhibition will be followed by New Delhi and Manchester.
For this exhibition, Young In Hong presents her new work 𝘚𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘌𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘴 (2025), created in collaboration with the traditional artisans of Kala Raksha in Kutch, Gujarat. The techniques, such as mirror work and appliqué, have been traditionally passed down as both cultural heritage and a means of economic independence for the women group. Hong developed a collaborative framework that respected the artisans’ creative autonomy while working within traditional design vocabularies.
Hong also presents 𝘛𝘩𝘪 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘯𝘫𝘢𝘯 (2021), a work that commemorates the lives of elephants living in community at Chester Zoo in the U.K. A pair of straw sandals made for the late grandmother elephant Thi and her grandson Anjan, crafted in collaboration with master straw craft artisans Chungkyung Lee and Yeonhwa Park, project human bodily presence and memory onto nonhuman beings.
