동시대 미술의 선도자 브루스 나우만(b.1941)은 웨인 티보의 어시스턴트로 미술계에 입문한 이후 1960년대부터 조각, 사진, 비디오, 홀로그램, 네온, 퍼포먼스 등 폭넓은 매체 스펙트럼을 오가며 활동해왔다. 그는 인터렉티브한 환경을 조성하거나 동물 또는 인간 신체에 기반한 작업을 통해 존재와 소외, 심리적·신체적 불안을 드러내며, 몸과 정체성에 대한 관념, 언어의 역할, 공간을 인식하는 현상, 과정으로서의 예술이라는 주제를 지속적으로 탐구한다. 나우만은 1990년 막스 베크만상, 1999년 베니스 비엔날레 황금사자상, 2014년 프레데릭 키슬러상 외 수많은 예술상을 수상했으며, 2004년 타임지가 뽑은 세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 100인 중 한 명으로 선정되기도 했다. 작가는 뉴욕 휘트니 미술관, 미네소타 워커 아트 센터, 파리 퐁피두 센터, 런던 테이트 모던, 헤이워드 갤러리, 네덜란드 크뢸러 뮐러 미술관 등 전 세계 유수 미술 기관에서 개인전을 개최했다. 그의 작품은 뉴욕 현대 미술관, 솔로몬 R.구겐하임 미술관, 테이트 모던, 바젤 현대 미술관 등에 영구 소장되어 있다. 나우만은 현재 뉴멕시코에서 거주하며 활동 중이다.
A pioneer of contemporary art, Bruce Nauman(b.1941) started his career in arts since becoming Wayne Thiebaud’s teaching assistant. Since the 1960s, Nauman has been working across a wide range of mediums including sculpture, photograph, video, hologram, neon lights, and performance. Nauman presents an interactive environment and creates works based on bodies of animals and people to raise issues about existence and marginalization, physiological and psychological anxiety. The notions of body and identity, the role of language, spatial awareness, and art as a process are recurring themes in Nauman’s art. He won various awards including the Max Beckmann Prize in 1990, the Golden Lion at Venice Biennale in 1999, and the Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts in 2014. In 2004, Nauman was chosen as one of the 100 most influential people by Times Magazine. He has held numerous solo exhibitions at Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, USA), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, USA), Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), Tate Modern (London, UK), Hayward Gallery (London, UK), and Kröller-Müller Museum (Otterlo, Netherlands). His works are permanently included in the collections of Museum of Modern Art (New York, USA), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, USA), Tate Modern (London, UK), and Kunstmuseum Basel (Basel, Switzerland). Nauman currently lives and works in New Mexico.
