이강소(b.1943)는 1970년대부터 회화, 판화, 퍼포먼스, 사진, 비디오, 설치 등 다양한 매개체를 활용한 실험적인 작업을 지속해왔다. 1975년 제9회 파리 비엔날레에서 살아있는 닭을 소재로 진행한 행위 예술 <닭의 퍼포먼스>는 해외와 국내 평단에 그를 각인시킨 작업이다. 1980년대부터 작가는 오리, 배, 사슴 등 한국화에 자주 등장하는 도상들을 활용하여 단색과 여백의 미가 돋보이는 회화 연작들을 선보였다. 화선지 대신 캔버스를, 먹이 아닌 아크릴 물감을 사용한 그의 회화는 동서양의 감수성을 아우르며 전통과 현대의 접점을 제시하였다는 호평을 받고 있다. 이강소는 베니스 팔라초카보토, 프랑스 생테티엔 현대미술관, 니스 아시아미술박물관, 대구미술관, 경주 아트선재미술관 등 전세계 주요 미술기관에서 작품전을 개최했으며, 그의 작업은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 호암미술관, 금호미술관, 런던 빅토리아&앨버트 박물관 등에 소장되어 있다.
Since the 1970s, Lee Kangso(b. 1942) has been producing experimental works that encompass a variety of genres including painting, print, performance, photography, video, and installation. Lee’s unprecedented performance, Chicken Performance that used a livestock chicken at the 9th Paris Biennale in 1975 allowed him to gain prominence in both the local and international art world. Since the 1980s, Lee has been presenting paintings that highlight his usage of ‘empty spaces’ and motifs that frequently appear in traditional Korean ink paintings such as duck, boat, and deer. Using canvas instead of rice paper and acrylic paint instead of ink, Lee is acclaimed to have transcended the Eastern and Western sensibilities. Lee has exhibited in major art institutions including Palazzo Caboto (Venice, Italty), Saint-Étienne Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Saint-Étienne, France), Musee des Arts Asiatiques (Nice, France), Daegu Art Museum (Daegu, Korea), and Art Sonje Museum (Gyeongju, Korea). His works are included in the collections of Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Ho-Am Art Museum (Yongin, Korea), Kumho Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), and Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK).
