임상빈(b.1976)은 회화적 감수성이 드러나는 특유의 사진 작업으로 국내외 미술계의 꾸준한 주목을 받고 있다. 전 세계 대도시와 유적지의 풍경들을 다른 시간, 다양한 시점에서 카메라 앵글에 차곡차곡 담은 후 디지털 자동 프로그램을 이. 용하여 한 장의 생경한 이미지로 재조합한 인공·인간적 사진 시리즈는 그의 대표작이다. 무수한 시공간을 총체적인 정경으로 재맥락화한 그의 작업은 찰나적인 현상계를 의문시하고 무위(無爲)와 인위(人爲)를 화해시키며 실재계에 새롭게 다가선다. 임상빈은 서울대학교에서 서양화 학사, 예일대학교에서 회화와 판화 석사, 컬럼비아대학교 티쳐스 칼리지에서 미술과 미술교육 전공으로 박사 학위를 받았다. 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 경기도미술관, 오사카 현대 미술관 등에서 전시를 개최했으며 서울미디어시티비엔날레(2002, 2006)를 비롯한 다수의 아트 프로젝트에 참여했다. 현재 성신여자대학교 미술대학 서양화과 교수로 재직 중이다.
Sangbin IM(b.1976) has garnered global recognition for his photographs that display his distinctive picturesque sensitivity. IM’s representative works are People and Artificiality series, which are composite photographs created by merging photos of different cityscapes and historical sites taken from different angles at different times into an exotic landscape photograph with automatic digital tools. Through his scenes of re-contextualized time and space, IM questions the fleeting moments of the phenomenal world and combines the “non-action” and “action,” showing his novel approach to the real world. IM earned a B.F.A. in the department of Western Painting from Seoul National University, an M.F.A. in the department of Painting and Printmaking at Yale University, and then completed his doctorate in Art and Art Education at Teacher's College, Columbia University. He held exhibitions at Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, Korea), Gyeonggj Museum of Art (Ansan, Korea), Osaka Museum of Modern Art (Osaka, Japan) and also participated in various art projects including the Seoul Mediacity Biennale. IM currently teaches at the College of Fine Art of Sungshin Women's University.
