PKM 갤러리는 오는 2월 4일부터 3월 21일까지 멀티 아티스트 백현진 (b. 1972)의 개인전 «Seoul Syntax»를 별관에서 개최한다. 지난 2021년 전시 «말보다는» 이후 동 갤러리에서 5년 만에 열리는 이번 개인전에서는 작가가 나고 자란 ‘서울’을 배경으로 한 장지 페인팅과 드로잉, 비디오 근작들이 소개된다.
미술가이자 음악가, 연기자로 전시장과 공연장, 스크린을 종횡무진하는 백현진은 평생 서울에 적을 두고 활동해왔다. 그는 수십 년간 변모해 온 서울의 풍경처럼 자신도 변화하고 있음을 긍정하며, 이 도시에서 태어나 살면서경험하고 느낀 삶의 궤적들을 흔적으로 남기기 시작했다. «Seoul Syntax»의 전시작은 그러한 사유와 실천의 결과물이다.
과거의 백현진이 물감이나 요소를 치기 어리게 쌓아 올리는 작업을 선보였다면, 금번에 소개되는 근작 페인팅과 드로잉은 비우듯 채워내는 작가 근래의 담담한 조형 언어를 보여준다. 이는 안정과 불안정, 정다움과 낯섦, 성공과 실패가 공존하는 동시대 서울의 가변적인 모습을 작가 고유의 어법(syntax)으로 걸러내 드러내는 것이기도 하다. 이와 함께 상영되는 ‹빛 23›은 서울 근교에서 원테이크로 촬영한 영상 작업이자 뮤직비디오다. 작업은 날씨의 변화와 인간의 희로애락을 낭만적으로 담아내며, 백현진이 체화한 도시의 서사를 시각적 이미지에서 시간의 흐름으로 확장한다.
백현진은 한국을 비롯해 미국, 영국, 독일, 이탈리아, 대만 등지에서 다수의 개인전을 개최했다. 국립현대미술관, 리움미술관, 일민미술관, 아트선재센터, 상하이 민생현대미술관, 쿤스트할레 빈, 노르웨이 베스트포센 미술관등 세계 유수 미술기관의 단체전에 참여했다. 2017년에는 국립현대미술관 '올해의 작가상' 후원작가로 선정된바 있다. 또한 그는 인디밴드 1세대인 ‘어어부 프로젝트’와 프로젝트팀 ‘방백’의 멤버이자 솔로로 활동하는 싱어송라이터로서, 영화 ‹북촌방향›, ‹경주›, ‹브로커›와 드라마 ‹무빙›, ‹모범택시› 등의 개성 있는 배우로서 전방위적인 예술 활동을 펼쳐 나가고 있다.
PKM Gallery is pleased to present Seoul Syntax, a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Bek Hyunjin (b. 1972), on view from February 4 to March 21 at the annex. This marks his first solo show at the gallery in five years since the 2021 exhibition Beyond Words and features recent jangji (traditional Korean mulberry paper) paintings, drawings, and video set against the backdrop of Seoul, the city where the artist was born and raised.
As an artist, musician, and actor whose practice spans the gallery, the stage, and the screen, Bek has been based in Seoul throughout his life. Embracing his own transformation—much like the city’s landscape, reshaped over decades—he has begun to leave traces of what he has experienced and felt while living in this city. The works in Seoul Syntax are the results of such reflections and practices.
While Bek’s earlier works leaned toward the spontaneous buildup of paint and materials, the recent paintings and drawings presented here articulate a composed language—one that fills by way of emptying. Through his own syntax, Bek filters and reveals a mutable contemporary Seoul, in which stability and instability, warmth and estrangement, success and failure coexist. Screening alongside these two-dimensional works, Light23 is a single-take video piece—and a music video—filmed on the outskirts of Seoul. The video romantically captures changes in weather and the range of human emotions, extending the urban narrative embodied by Bek from visual images into the passage of time.
Bek Hyunjin has held numerous solo exhibitions in various places, including Korea, the USA, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Taiwan. Bek has participated in group exhibitions at major art institutions worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul, Ilmin Museum of Art in Seoul, Art Sonje Center in Seoul, Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai, Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, and Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium in Vestfossen. In 2017, Bek was chosen as a sponsored artist for the ‘Korea Art Prize’ of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. He is also active as a singer-songwriter—both as a member of the pioneering indie band Uhuhboo Project and the project band Bahngbek—and as an actor, with appearances in films The Day He Arrives, Gyeongju, and Broker, as well as the series Moving and Taxi Driver. Bek continues to expand his wide-ranging artistic practice.
