PKM 갤러리는 오는 6월 18일부터 7월 19일까지 구현모(b.1974)의 개인전 «Echoes from the Cabinet» 을 개최한다. 섬세한 미감과 함께 시적인 울림을 주는 작업으로 주목받아온 그는 이번 전시에서 세라믹, 페인팅, 행잉 및 월 조각 등 다양한 미디엄으로 구성된 신작 28여 점을 선보인다.
구현모는 생물과 무생물, 자율성과 타율성, 진화와 설계의 이분법이 구조적으로 접속되는 동시대적 현실에 주의를 기울인다. 그는 인공물이 단순한 도구를 넘어 인간의 장기나 신체 일부처럼 통합되는 현상에 주목하여 이를 다양한 매체를 통해 시각화한다. 색채와 형태에는 유희적인 감각과 철학적 사유가 공존하며,‘자연과 인공’이라는 전통적 구분이 무의미해진 시대에 익숙한 세계를 새롭게 바라보도록 유도한다.
이번 전시에는 구현모가 처음 선보이는 세라믹 조형 작업이 포함된다. 세라믹은 홍익대학교 도예과에서 출발한 작가에게 낯선 재료가 아닌 조형적 사유의 시작점으로, 세라믹과 우레탄폼을 혼합한 실험적 재료를 통해 자연과 인공 사이의 긴장과 균형, 접속의 가능성을 입체적으로 탐색한다. 작가는 전시 공간 전체를 활용한 설치 작업을 비롯해 세라믹, 페인팅, 행잉 조각 등 다양한 매체를 유기적으로 배치하여 상호 간의 연결과 공명을 유도하고, 각 작업이 하나의 감각적 서사 안에서 물성과 개념의 경계를 넘나들도록 구성한다.
구현모는 홍익대학교 도예과와 드레스덴 예술학교(Dresden Academy of Fine Art) 조소과를 졸업하고, 마틴 호너 트 교수(Prof. Martin Honert)에게서 마이스터슐러 학위를 취득했다. 독일의 베를린, 라이프치히, 드레스덴 등지에서 활발하게 활동해 왔으며, 아르코미술관, 뮤지엄 산, 성곡미술관, OCI 미술관, 아트센터 나비 등 유수의 미술기관에서 개최하는 전시에 참여했다. 2009년에는 노벨 수상자들의 산지이자 기초과학, 인문학, 예술 등 다학제 간 연구를 독려하는 막스플랑크연구소(MPI-CBG)에서 미술상을 수상하였다. 그의 작품은 드레스덴 국립미술관(Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden)에 소장되어 있다.
PKM Gallery is pleased to present Echoes from the Cabinet by Koo Hyunmo (b.1974) at PKM+ from June 18th to July 19th. Widely recognized for his poetic resonance and refined visual language, Koo unveils over 28 new works including ceramics, paintings, 3D pen drawings, hanging sculptures, and wall-based installations.
Koo’s practice centers on the structural convergence of dichotomies in contemporary reality—such as organism and artifact, autonomy and heteronomy, evolution and design. He focuses on how artificial objects are no longer mere tools but increasingly integrated into the human body as extensions or even internal organs, visualizing this phenomenon through various media. His works merge playful sensibility with philosophical depth in color and form, prompting viewers to reexamine the familiar world in an era where the conventional boundary between the natural and the artificial has grown ambiguous.
This exhibition marks Koo’s first presentation of ceramic sculptures—signifying not a departure but a return to his foundational training in ceramics at Hongik University. Through experimental combinations of ceramic and urethane foam, he explores the tension, equilibrium, and connective possibilities between the natural and the artificial in sculptural form. Spanning the exhibition space, Koo arranges ceramics, paintings and hanging sculptures in an organic constellation, encouraging resonance and interplay among the works. Each piece moves fluidly between materiality and concept, forming a cohesive sensory narrative.
Koo Hyunmo studied ceramics at Hongik University in Seoul and received his Meisterschüler degree in sculpture under Professor Martin Honert at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, Germany. He has actively exhibited in Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, and other cities throughout Germany, and has participated in group exhibitions at prominent institutions in Korea, including the ARKO Art Center, Museum SAN, Sungkok Art Museum, OCI Museum, and Art Center Nabi. In 2009, Koo received an art prize from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG), an institution dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary research across the field of basic science, humanities, and arts. His works are included in the collection of Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden in Dresden.
