PKM 갤러리는 오는 6월 5일부터 7월 12일까지 한국 현대 추상미술을 선도한 서승원 화백(b. 1941)의 «The Interplay»를 개최한다. 2021년 동 갤러리에서의 작품전 이후 4년 만에 열리는 이번 개인전에서는 그의 2020년대 회화 20여 점을 통해 서 화백이 근래 추구하고 있는 미학과 조형적인 탐구가 집중 조명된다.
서승원 화백은 1960년대부터 추상 화면에 한국의 정신성을 결합하는 독창적인 작품세계를 구축해 왔다. 그는 기하추상 그룹 ‘오리진 Origin (1962–)’과 전위미술 단체 ‘한국아방가르드협회 AG (1969-1975)’의 창립회원으로 한국 현대미술의 기반을 형성하는 데 중추적인 역할을 함과 동시에, ‘동시성Simultaneity’이라는 자신만의 조형 언어를 수립하고 이를 근현대를 관통하여 꾸준히 전개하였다. 그가 50여 년 동안 천착한 ‘동시성’의 개념은 감각할 수 있는 현실 세계와 그 너머의 내면세계가 하나의 장(場)으로 공존한다는 철학적인 사유를 담고 있다.
이번 전시 «The Interplay»에서는 빛과 색채의 중첩과 환원적인 구성, 조화와 균형을 통하여 ‘동시성’ 개념을 더욱 발전시킨 서승원 화백의 최근작이 공개된다. 물리적인 스케일보다 회화의 밀도와 깊이에 초점을 맞추어 선정된 100호 미만의 작품들은, 독립적이면서도 서로 상호 작용하는 상태로 전시장의 여백을 리듬감 있게 점유한다. 서 화백은 창호지 문 너머 어른거리던 햇볕에 대한 어린 시절의 기억을 바탕으로, 안팎의 구분 없이 빛이 스미는 세계를 화면으로써 정제해 왔다. 본 전시에서 서승원은 빛과 색, 시간과 공간이 교차하는 우주로 무한히 확장하는 회화를 선보이며, 평면의 한계를 넘어선 깊이와 울림을 관객에게 선사할 예정이다.
서 화백은 홍익대학교에서 회화 전공으로 학·석사를 취득한 이래, 20세기 중반부터 한국, 일본, 대만, 미국, 프랑스, 독일을 포함한 각국의 유수 미술기관 전시와 파리 비엔날레, 상파울루 비엔날레, 광주 비엔날레 등의 국제 미술 행사에 다수 참가하였다. 한국 현대미술이 세계 무대에서 주목 받는 데 결정적인 역할을 한 «한국 5인의 작가, 다섯 가지의 흰색» 동경화랑 (1975)의 참여 작가였으며, 한국미술대상전 최우수상 (1978), 광주문화예술상 (2013), 한국예술평론가협의회 최우수 예술가상 (2017) 등을 수상하며 그 예술성을 인정받은 바 있다. 영국 대영박물관, 구겐하임 아부다비, 한국 국립현대미술관, 리움미술관 등 세계 주요 미술 기관에서 그의 작품을 소장하고 있다.
PKM Gallery is pleased to present The Interplay, an exhibition by Suh Seung-Won (b. 1941), a leading figure in Korean contemporary abstract art, from June 5th to July 12th. Following his previous exhibition at the gallery in 2021, the exhibition features approximately 20 paintings from the 2020s, highlighting Suh’s recent aesthetics and formal explorations.
Since the 1960s, Suh has developed a distinctive visual language that fuses abstraction with the spiritual sensibility of Korea. A founding member of Origin (1962–), a geometric abstraction group, and AG (1969–1975), an avant-garde collective, Suh played a pivotal role in laying the foundations of Korean contemporary art. Central to his practice is the concept of Simultaneity—the belief that the physical and internal worlds coexist within a single field. This philosophy, guiding his practice for over five decades, reflects a synthesis of sensory perception and transcendental thought.
In The Interplay, Suh’s recent works deepen his exploration of Simultaneity through layered light and color, reductive composition, and a refined sense of harmony and balance. Selected for their visual density and depth over physical scale, the works are rhythmically installed throughout the gallery. Each painting stands independently yet resonates in quiet dialogue with others. Drawing upon his childhood memories of sunlight shimmering through traditional Korean paper (changhoji) windows, Suh has refined a pictorial world where light permeates the interior and exterior spaces. His recent works expand toward a cosmic dimension—where light, color, time, and space intersect—offering a sense of depth and resonance that transcends the canvas.
Suh Seung-Won received his BFA and MFA in painting from Hongik University in Seoul. Since the mid-20th century, he has participated in numerous exhibitions at major art institutions across countries, including Korea, Japan, Taiwan, the United States, France, and Germany, as well as international art events such as Paris Biennale, São Paulo Biennale, and Gwangju Biennale. His participation in the seminal exhibition Five Korean Artists, Five Kinds of White (1975) at the Tokyo Gallery marked a turning point for the global recognition of Korean contemporary art. The artist has received numerous awards, including the Korean Art Grand Award (1978), the Gwangju Culture and Arts Award (2013), and the Best Artist Award from the Korean Art Critics Association (2017). His works are included in the permanent collections of the British Museum in London, the Guggenheim in Abu Dhabi, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Gwacheon, and Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul.
