강이연(b.1982)은 최근 국내외에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 한국의 미디어 아티스트로 영상과 사운드를 통해 공간을 빚어내는 획기적인 프로젝션 매핑(projection mapping) 작업들을 선보여 왔다. 그가 구현하는 공감각적 세계는 과거와 현재, 그리고 다가오는 미래의 사회적, 역사적, 환경적 이슈를 다루며 인간이 지닌 이분법적 사고와 행위, 그 과정과 결과에 대한 숙고의 시간을 갖게 한다. 강이연은 서울시립미술관, 런던 빅토리아 앨버트 박물관, 타이페이 현대미술관, 유네스코 등 주요 기관의 전시에 다수 참석하였다. 2020년에는 글로벌 현대미술 프로젝트 <CONNECT, BTS> 에 유일한 한국 작가로 이름을 올렸으며, 2021년에는 막스 마라 커미션의 <Deep Surface>로 ‘레드 닷 어워드’를 수상했다. 현재 강이연은 영국 왕립예술학교의 객원 교수이자 왕립예술학회의 펠로우로서, 밀라노 공과대학교, 소아스(SOAS) 런던, 소더비 인스티튜트 등 해외 유수의 교육기관에서 강연을 하고 학술논문을 발표하며 활동 스펙트럼을 넓혀가고 있다.
Yiyun Kang(b.1982) is one of the most active and acclaimed Korean media artists in the international art scene today who presents projection mapping artworks that recast the space with moving image and sound. Kang’s syn-aesthetic world allows people to contemplate on the processes and results of a dichotomous way of human’s thinking and acting while dealing social, historical, and environmental issues of the past, present and future. She has held exhibitions at numerous institutions such as the Seoul Museum of Art, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Museum of Contemporary Arts in Taipei, and UNESCO, etc. In 2020, she participated in the transcontinental contemporary art project <CONNECT, BTS> as the only Korean artist and in 2021, Kang received the Red Dot Award for <Deep Surface>, a commissioned exhibition by Max Mara. Dr. Yiyun Kang received her BFA from Seoul National University, MFA from UCLA’s Design & Media Arts, and PhD from Royal College of Art (RCA). As a visiting professor at the RCA and a fellow of Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Kang is currently increasing her scope of activities by lecturing and by presenting her academic paper.
