1980년대 중반부터 작가이자 문화이론가로서 활동해온 코디 최(b.1961)는 현대사회의 문화정체성과 권력관계에 대해 탐구한다. 그는 회화, 조각, 설치 등의 작업을 통하여 현시대의 다양한 문화가 빚어내는 충돌과 그 간극에서 탄생한 제3의 문화 혹은 혼종문화, 그리고 끊임없이 탄생하는 동시대 새로운 사회 현상에 대해 주목한다. 그는 아트센터 칼리지 오브 디자인을 졸업하였으며, 제57회 베니스 비엔날레 한국관 전시 및 쿤스트할레 뒤셀도르프, 마르세유 현대미술관, 켐니츠 미술관 등지에서 유럽순회 회고전을 개최하며 작품성을 크게 인정받았다. 『20세기 문화 지형도』 (2006) 『동시대 문화 지형도』 (2010) 등 현대문화에 관한 전문비평서를 출간한 바 있다.
Cody Choi (b.1961), who has been active as an artist and cultural theorist since the mid-1980s, explores the cultural identity and power dynamics within contemporary society. Through painting, sculpture, and installation, Choi focuses on the clashes among diverse cultures, the emergence of a third or hybrid culture created in their interstices, and the constantly evolving new social phenomena of our time. He graduated from Art Center College of Design and has been widely recognized for his artistic achievements, holding a major touring retrospective across Europe at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Musée d’ Art Contemporain de Marseille, and Kunstsammlungen-chemnitz, as well as representing artist at the Korean Pavilion for the 57th Venice Biennale. His publication includes Topography of 20th Century Culture (2006) and Topography of Contemporary Culture (2010), which are critiques about contemporary society and culture.
