1980년대 중반부터 시각예술가이자 문화이론가로 국내외 미술 현장에서 꾸준한 저력을 발휘하고 있는 코디 최는 현대사회의 문화 정체성과 권력관계를 중점적으로 탐구해왔다. 작가는 청년 시절 미국 내 이방인으로서 자신이 경험했던 문화적 소화불량, 둘 이상의 문화가 충돌하며 빚어진 제3공간과 그 혼종의 아름다움, 동시다발적으로 발생하는 새로운 사회현상에 주목한다. 코디 최는 1990년대 중반 뉴욕 다이치 프로젝트 개인전과 프랑스 마르세유 현대 미술관 개관 기념 그룹전 등으로 일찍이 세계적인 작가로서 명성을 다졌다. 2015년부터 2017년까지 저명 미술사학자 존 웰치맨의 기획으로 쿤스트할레 뒤셀도르프, 마르세유 현대 미술관, 독일 켐니츠 미술관에서 순회 회고전을 개최했으며, 2017년에는 베니스 비엔날레 한국관 대표 작가로 선정되었다. 『20세기 문화 지형도』(2006) 『동시대 문화 지형도』(2010) 등 현대 사회문화에 관한 전문 비평서를 출간한 바 있다.
Cody Choi(b.1961), who has consistently been active as a visual artist and cultural theorist since the 1980s, explores the cultural identity and relationship of authority within contemporary society. Choi touches upon topics of cultural maldigestion, third-culture created by the clash of different cultures, the beauty of such hybridism, and simultaneously occurring new social phenomena—all of which Choi experienced as a foreigner in the US. Choi gained his stature as a world-renowned artist after participating in a solo exhibition at Deitch Projects (New York, USA) and an inaugural group exhibition at the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Marseille (Marseille, France) in the mid-1990s. From 2015 to 2017 he had a retrospective traveling show at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf, Germany), Musée d’Art Contemporain de Marseille (Marseille, France), Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz (Chemnitz, Germany) organized by art-historian John C. Welchman. Choi was a representing artist at the Korean Pavilion for the 2017 Venice Biennale. His publication includes Topography of 20th Century Culture (2006) and Topography of Contemporary Culture (2010), which are critiques about contemporary society and culture.
